To be understood...

" They stopped explaining themselves because they realise people only understand from their level of perception.
Open your mind because knowledge is beyond imagination."
I am actually worried to talk about this because this is a really sensitive issue. And knowing people might read this, I feel I have to be very careful with my words. Also, I have gone through some moments of it which have made me truly aware of the contradicting arguments about this matter.
Postings one after another and people are still relating depression and lack of faith. Sometimes I really feel the urge to suggest for institutions and religious group to come together and talk about these things and have a discussion about it. I need some answers from both parties who are knowledgeable in BOTH aspects. BECAUSE GOD KNOWS HOW TIRED I AM OF HEARING PEOPLE BLAMING ONE'S FAITH AS THE CAUSE OF THEIR DEPRESSION.
So last week, I wrote up my own opinion on it. Being a science student learning medical things, I truly feel a strong a kind of disfavoured opinion. Because frankly speaking, I disagree in relating science and religious together side by side. Science can be a prove of Gods creation. Science can be an evidence. But there are some things that cannot be co-related between science and the spiritual level of a person. Some scientific facts stay in science and some spiritual knowledge stays there too.
So this is the short write up I posted on FB:
"Faith is part of our spiritual health while depression is a form of mental illness, thus, mental health. Genetic and environment factor play a role in the development of depression. The underlying pathophysiological basis of depression is a depletion of the neurotransmitters serotonin, norepinephrine or dopamine in the central nervous system. This affects brain activity. Then we look at the definition of mental illness.
A mental illness can be defined as a health condition that changes a person's thinking, feelings, or behavior (or all three) and that causes the person distress and difficulty in functioning. Examples include depression, schizophrenia, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), autism, and obsessive-compulsive disorder.
Since depression comes in the same category as other mental diseases including autism and ADHD, why don't we blame spiritual health against those illnesses too? And if someone has a mental illness, do you think their brain is functioning properly? The brain is an organ and the heart is an organ. Do we blame not understanding qada' and qadar for a congenital defect of the heart? Do we blame our spiritual health for breast cancer?
Okay, then depression causes a big uproar about intentional death. Then how about those who know about smoking being the leading cause of Lung cancer which causes death? Does that mean their spiritual health also plays a part? "
I might be wrong, I might be right. But it doesn't solve anything. The only way to find out the REAL ANSWER is to sit down with two very knowledgeable human beings that study about depression and religious aspects and discuss it. Also, I feel it is important to create an awareness about this in the community because people have been talking about this without any prior knowledge. On behalf of those who are diagnosed with depression, I feel they deserve some respect and understanding about the illness and what they are going through every single day.
I pray the community would at least try to understand something that is beyond their capability or something that is difficult to process. Just because we don't go through it, doesn't mean we can't take the effort to understand. And for those who are going through tough times, don't forget there are people who care for you, or just remember He does. ♥
